Cross Peach Pie With Peach Crisp For Best Of Both Worlds
If you can’t decide between making a peach pie or a peach crisp, make a Deep Dish Peaches dessert instead. Imagine a bubbly hot fruit casserole under a golden brown crust. The idea is similar to an old fashioned chicken pot pie. But with peaches instead! I keep the ingredients simple, using a basic pie crust recipe for the topping and canned peaches with the juice reserved. The only spice I use is nutmeg, which adds a nice background flavor to the sweetness of the peaches. A little lemon helps give it a little tangy flavor, too. This is the kind of dessert that looks and tastes very homemade-old-fashioned style. Don’t be too careful with the crust topping, leaving a few holes in fact, so it looks homey and some of the juice bubbles up and marks the top.
Oftentimes, I find canned fruit on sale at my local grocery store. That’s when having a few frugal fruit recipes handy pays off. When I get home with my grocery store find, I want to quickly whip up something for dessert so I can pat myself on the back for a job well done!
