There was a time when people were drinking water from the tap directly without carrying out any kind of filtration.  Whatever filtration process the local municipality carried out, that was it.  As children, I don’t remember drinking filtered water at all.  Even at school, we would drink water from the tap directly.  I do not remember having had any serious infection as a child, apart from cough and cold or mild fever, which is a normal part of growing up.  I don’t even remember having heard of water filtration for the whole house.
